ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES 2 (ENGL 112)

OVERVIEW

1. COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course builds to equip the students with basic skills in information searching, teach the students how to write essays and research papers using appropriate academic English language; introduce the APA style (formatting and referencing) to research papers and expand the students’ general knowledge of the world through reading of a higher level of internationally acclaimed literary classics.

2. REASON FOR THE COURSE

This course is to develop and strengthen the students’ ability to write English academic essays and research papers.  Advanced academic English language including grammar, structures, styles, tones, and mechanics are further applied to the development of more complex academic essays, and the APA format and referencing are used to ensure standard English and avoid plagiarism. In addition, this course includes high-level literary texts to expand the students’ vocabulary and general knowledge, and to develop their critical thinking skills.

Successful completion of English for Academic Purposes I (ENGL 101) or English for Academic Purposes 1P (ENGL 101P) is a prerequisite for this course.

7 ACHING METHODS

This course uses demonstrations, lectures and group work. Half of the class session focuses on literature text reading including tests (Google Form), assignments and homework (Google Doc.). Other half of the class session will be practicing on writing and peer reviewing; class demonstrations also include  discussion, reflections and presentation toward the literature text reading.

Essay: The assignment will include one academic essay on a topic approved by the lecturer.

8. STUDY PLAN
