ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES 2 PLUS (ENGL 102P)

OVERVIEW

1. COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course continues to support students with low English ability from (English 101P) to develop and strengthen the students’ ability to write English academic essays and research papers.  Advanced academic English language including grammar, structures, styles, tones, and mechanics are further applied to the development of more complex academic essays, and the APA format and referencing are used to ensure standard English and avoid plagiarism. In addition, this course includes high-level literary texts to expand the students’ vocabulary and general knowledge, and to develop their critical thinking skills.

2. REASON FOR THE COURSE

This course builds on the foundations of English for Academic Purpose 1P (Plus) in order to equip the students with basic skills in information searching. To teach the students how to write essays and research papers using appropriate academic English language; and to introduce the APA style (formatting and referencing) to research papers as well as to expand the students’ general knowledge of the world through reading of a higher level of internationally acclaimed literary classics.

Prerequisite:
English for Academic Purposes 1P (ENGL 101P) is a prerequisite for English for Academic Purposes 2P (ENGL 102P) or in English for Academic Purposes 2 (ENGL 102). 
In case students who successfully complete English for Academic Purposes 1 (ENGL 101) may be enrolled in English for Academic Purposes 2P (ENGL 102P), but need to consult the Enrollment Council.

7. TEACHING METHODS

This course uses demonstrations, lectures and group work. Half of the class session focuses on literature text reading including tests (Google Form), assignments and homework (Google Doc.). Other half of the class session will be practicing on writing and peer reviewing; class demonstrations also include  discussion, reflections and presentation toward the literature text reading.

8. STUDY PLAN

The course includes 50 lessons, each of which is 1.5 class hours. The total number of class hours is 75.
