TEAM PSYCHOLOGY (PSYC 411)

AIM

This course aims to develop knowledge about group dynamics and skills in interpersonal behaviour and communication by analysing potential problems in team processes and reflecting on interpersonal behavioural tendencies in order to be able to create and maintain a professional working environment.

Soft skills such as communication, teamwork and conflict resolution are an essential part of a successful business and being a professional. Soft skills are detrimental for an efficient output from employees and improves leadership abilities such as negotiating, motivating and empathy. This makes it an essential skill for our graduates where they need to have clear insights in their own behaviour and the theories of group dynamics in order to maintain and influence professional relationships, create efficient team processes and successfully manage teams.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course focuses on group dynamics, interpersonal behaviour and communication by using theories of social psychology, team roles according to the theory of Belbin, and active listening techniques.

Prerequisites

Students should have successfully finished Psychology before entering the course Team Psychology.

STUDY PLAN

The course targets the 9 lessons in the study plan below. Each lesson is 1.5 class hours each; there are a total of 15 class hours. The study plan below describes the learning outcome for each lesson, described in terms of what the student should be able to do at the end of the lesson. Readings should be done by students as preparation before the start of each class. Implementation of this study plan may vary somewhat depending on the progress and needs of students.

TEACHING METHODS

This course is primarily lecture based. Assigned readings will support topics covered in class and a workbook will further support learning. Lectures will have an emphasis on interactive group practices where around half of the lecture will be lecture based and the other half will focus on class assignments, group discussions and practising with soft skills.

During the term there will be one assignment.
For this assignment students have to reflect on their own interpersonal behaviour and put this in context of group dynamics. The assignment will be an essay describing own team role preference according to the theory of Belbin and an analysis of the potential strengths and challenges this can give in teams when taking group dynamics into account.
